Grade1 Math

 ✨Grade 1 Math focuses on

  • building a strong foundation in addition and subtraction within 20,
  • understanding place value up to 120, and solving simple word problems.
  • Students also learn to measure lengths, tell time to the hour and half-hour, and identify basic shapes and their attributes.
These skills help develop number sense and problem-solving abilities essential for future math learning.

1. Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

  • Add and subtract within 20

    • Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction (e.g., joining, separating, comparing).

    • Represent problems with objects, drawings, and equations.

  • Understand relationship between addition and subtraction

    • Use subtraction as unknown-addend problems.

  • Apply properties of operations

    • Understand commutative (a + b = b + a) and associative properties.

  • Fluency

    • Add and subtract within 20 fluently (quickly and accurately).

2. Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • Counting and Number Patterns

    • Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120.

    • Read and write numbers to 120.

  • Place Value Concepts

    • Understand tens and ones (e.g., 34 = 3 tens + 4 ones).

  • Comparing Numbers

    • Compare two-digit numbers using >, <, =.

  • Adding and Subtracting Within 100

    • Use place value understanding to add and subtract.

    • Mentally find 10 more or 10 less than a given number.

3. Measurement and Data (MD)

  • Measuring Length

    • Order three objects by length.

    • Compare lengths indirectly using a third object.

    • Measure length using whole units.

  • Time

    • Tell and write time to the hour and half hour.

  • Data and Graphs

    • Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories.

    • Ask and answer simple questions about data.

4. Geometry (G)

  • Shapes and Their Attributes

    • Distinguish defining (number of sides) vs. non-defining attributes (color).

    • Build and draw shapes.

  • Compose Shapes

    • Combine two- or three-dimensional shapes to form new shapes.

  • Partitioning Shapes

    • Divide circles and rectangles into halves and fourths.

    • Understand and use terms halves, fourths, and quarters.
